![]() Instead of having some kind of memento of their accomplishments or keeping the games live, Zynga is offering to move players to another game with a package of virtual goods in the case of some of the games being shut down. Shutting them down allows Zynga to re-allocate resources and reduce costs. Looking at the numbers of players below, it is clear why Zynga would shut the games down - they aren't on the scale of Zynga's most popular games. Much of its success currently lies with its mobile games, like "Texas Hold 'Em Poker" and "Words With Friends." Players of mobile titles - like Mafia Wars Shakedown - have been told to contact Zynga Customer Support for possible compensation. The list of games being shut down is mostly games that are run on Facebook - which isn't surprising given that Zynga, like many other companies, is seeing its player base migrate increasingly to mobile devices. Zynga has already offered players of PetVille and other titles a free bonus package of virtual items for Castleville, Chefville, Farmville 2, Mafia Wars or Yoville. Finally, Indiana Jones Adventure World has been closed for new players, with a sunset date of January 14. Montopia was closed on December 21, with PetVille and Mafia Wars 2 following on December 30. Vampire Wars joined Treasure Isle and FishVille as games shut down on December 5. Mafia Wars Shakedown, ForestVille, Mojitomo and Word Scramble Challenge have been pulled from app stores already. The current closure list covers 11 of those 13. At the time, Pincus said that a total of 13 titles were on the chopping block, but only Treasure Isle and FishVille were mentioned. The closures are a part of the cost-reduction plan put forth by chief executive officer Mark Pincus in November. Zynga has decided to terminate 11 games in a cost-cutting measure, according to TechCrunch. ![]()
